Created a crossword of affirmations for children

We’ve spent some time at automating the process of creating crosswords. There are still some manual steps involved but the process of creating a crossword is a lot easier than before.

Ralph Waldo Emerson – Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world.

“Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

This quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson reminds me that fear is a state of mind that can cause inaction and is generally harmful.

Zig Ziglar came up with a good acronym for fear. False Evidence Appearing Real – FEAR.

Sometimes I do experience fear … not often … sometimes. When I do experience fear I normally remind myself of the story of the man who gave up on a gold mine just three feet short of where the vein started again. After that I just start again on the path I have chosen :-)

    Three Feet From Gold

    by Napoleon Hill

One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when one is overtaken by temporary defeat. Every person is guilty of this mistake at one time or another.

An uncle of R. U. Darby was caught by the gold fever in the gold-rush days, and went west to DIG AND GROW RICH. He had never heard that more gold has been mined from the brains of men than has ever been taken from the earth. He staked a claim and went to work with pick and shovel. The going was hard, but his lust for gold was definite.

After weeks of labor, he was rewarded by the discovery of the shining ore. He needed machinery to bring the ore to the surface. Quietly, he covered up the mine, retraced his footsteps to his home in Williamsburg, Maryland, told his relatives and a few neighbors of the “strike.” They got together money for the needed machinery, had it shipped. The uncle and Darby went back to work the mine.

The first car of ore was mined, and shipped to a smelter. The returns proved they had one of the richest mines in Colorado! A few more cars of that ore would clear the debts. Then would come the big killing in profits.

Down went the drills! Up went the hopes of Darby and Uncle! Then something happened! The vein of gold ore disappeared! They had come to the end of the rainbow, and the pot of gold was no longer there! They drilled on, desperately trying to pick up the vein again— all to no avail.

    Finally, they decided to QUIT.

They sold the machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars, and took the train back home. Some “junk” men are dumb, but not this one! He called in a mining engineer to look at the mine and do a little calculating. The engineer advised that the project had failed, because the owners were not familiar with “fault lines.” His calculations showed that the vein would be found just three feet from where the Darbys had stopped drilling! That is exactly where it was found!

The “Junk” man took millions of dollars in ore from the mine, because he knew enough to seek expert counsel before giving up.

Most of the money which went into the machinery was procured through the efforts of R. U. Darby, who was then a very young man. The money came from his relatives and neighbors, because of their faith in him. He paid back every dollar of it, although he was years in doing so.

Long afterward, Mr. Darby recouped his loss many times over, when he made the discovery that desire can be transmuted into gold. The discovery came after he went into the business of selling life insurance.

Remembering that he lost a huge fortune, because he stopped three feet from gold, Darby profited by the experience in his chosen work, by the simple method of saying to himself, “I stopped three feet from gold, but I will never stop because men say ‘no’ when I ask them to buy insurance.”

Darby is one of a small group of fewer than fifty men who sell more than a million dollars in life insurance annually. He owes his stickability to the lesson he learned from his quitability in the gold mining business.

Before success comes in any man’s life, he is sure to meet with much temporary defeat, and, perhaps, some failure. When defeat overtakes a man, the easiest and most logical thing to do is to quit. That is exactly what the majority of men do. More than five hundred of the most successful men this country has ever known told the author their greatest success came just one step beyond the point at which defeat had overtaken them. Failure is a trickster with a keen sense of irony and cunning. It takes great delight in tripping one when success is almost within reach.

      What Makes You Happy?

The other day I was searching the net looking to compile a list of 50 things that make people happy. The idea was to use these (words) to create a crossword puzzle, which could be then turned into a teaching device. In other words, when playing these crosswords, people would be prompted to look beyond things, events and activities (that they think are causing them to be happy) and think more about principles of happiness that are hidden behind those.

The aim would be then to build affirmationsquestionsquotations and/or scriptural reminders around those principles and listen to them daily with the help of a tool such as MiAffirmations. This would help reprogram/renew one’s mind and cause it to be focused on the principles of happiness (and not particular things). As a consequence, such focus would increase (attract more) happiness into one’s life and it would also increase the number of “sources” (i.e. things, events, activities etc.) happiness would be able to manifest through.

Because, whatever you will focus on, the same will be attracted into (manifested in) your life. In addition, if you focus on generic principles, you will be able find all channels through which such principles manifest. You won’t be limited to just a few of the obvious channels (i.e. things, events or activities) through which they manifest, but would also become aware even of the more subtle channels (meaning that you will be able to find happiness in more places than before).

So, my intention was to go through the top 50 websites listed when googling the “makes me happy” search term, and look what people talk about and then compile the list. However, I got stuck on the very first link:—I liked it so much that all 40 words of the crossword puzzle below are derived from that site.

This, certainly, is not an exhaustive list of “principles of happiness”, so please comment and suggest other good examples. We’ll create additional puzzles when enough suggestions are made.

          Meditation 24/7

It’s quite easy to turn MiAffirmations into a meditation tool. You record your mantra into an existing playlist or create a new playlist, turn repeat on and choose a relaxing and/or meaningful background music.

Note that the free version has 3 predefined playlists and you cannot create new ones. This restriction does not exist in the paid version—for more info see the version comparison table.

Obviously, this technique would work only with mantras that have a meaning. It’s not useful with mantras that do not have any specific meaning (but are designed to be mere concentration tools).

            What is a “harmoniser”?

I recently started using this title on my business card. I thought it would be catchy, but I was really surprised with the interest it created at a leadership meeting today. Many people asked me what the “harmoniser” is? and what does a “harmoniser” do?

So, basically, harmonisers (as I see them) are a breed of leaders that the world very much needs today. These people are happy and peaceful (well, a majority of the time) and their abundant peace and happiness spills out into their families, neighborhoods and work environments.

In business, they harmonize people, processes and systems they work with. They bring blessing into a team, which starts to flourish seemingly out of nothing. They would perform their tasks very well, but would also operate in the domain of group consciousness—to eliminate the agents of fear, anxiety and stress. In their harmonizing efforts, harmonisers are always focused on the long term goal, as it takes time to help establish harmony.

If you are a believer, a harmoniser is a person who intentionally helps, uplifts, cares and prays for others because she or he thinks it is hers/his sacred duty.  If you a non-believer, a harmoniser is a person who intentionally helps, uplifts and cares for others because he or she genuinely loves people. If we lived in the Star Wars galaxy, harmonisers would be Jedi warriors.

Structurally, harmonisers would position themselves as team leaders (and further up the chain) of the environment they move and work in, but it is not uncommon for harmonisers to completely avoid all of that in order to focus their work within the domain of group consciousness.

Worth mentioning is the source of harmoniser’s positive attitude, peace and happiness. If you want to be a successful harmoniser, you should hook up with the infinite reservoir of the same, so you could freely share harmony, peace and happiness with everybody else without depleting your own reserves.

Everybody in the world seeks this source, and they find it in all sorts of places and human activities. But for me, as a believer, this source could be found only in a personal relationship with God, who never changes and is always full (no matter the amount of happiness, peace and love you would ask Him to sprinkle over the others).

Positive Repetitive Affirming Image Sound Education – PRAISE: How kids may learn math or chemistry while playing action games!

Yesterday I’ve stumbled across a new use case for MiAffirmations—and the word is PRAISE (Positive Repetitive Affirming Image Sound Education).

My boy did not have a good night sleep and thoughts about last night’s bad dream kept coming up throughout the day (i.e. for some reason usual cuddles and assurances did not completely remove the fear caused by this particular bad dream). So, I wanted to help him by giving him an affirmation, which would play in the loop (on his iPad), and cause him to forget the nightmare and overcome the fear.

I’ve created a new MiAffirmations playlist containing the mentioned affirmation followed by the 5-second “silence” file. I’ve set it to run in the repeat mode and then switched to the iPad screen. The achieved effect was that MiAffirmations was playing in the background and the affirmation was heard every 5 seconds.

Then he started his favorite iPad game, which opened up and started it’s own background music and sound effects. As he was playing, every 5 seconds you could hear the affirmation play mixed with the game sound.

Then the moment of epiphany came. What if I record a times table detailing the results of multiplication operations, or periodic table describing the properties of chemical elements and play those in MiAffirmations tool while my son is playing with his games? That would mean that he would receive bits of information while leisurely playing on iPad and not even thinking about learning. In other words I would be able to extend his knowledge education session even into his play time — PRAISE.

Well, “learning while you play” is an old thing, but usually the knowledge gathered during play time was more about picking up new physical or social skills. But here we are talking about feeding in dry facts, memorizing volumes of hard data (which would take months of diligent study time) and learning the whole curricula (e.g. history, math, chemistry etc.) during the leisure time, by using the technique of Positive Repetitive Affirming Image Sound Education ( PRAISE ).

I’m really excited about this and will try it out; it reminds me of flash cards that we used when he was younger—but here we are using educational sound clips. What are your thoughts on this? What would you teach your kid if you would want to apply the PRAISE method in his or hers education? Do you see some other alternative use for MiAffirmations?

If you would like to try PRAISE on your child (or on yourself) you could use the free version of MiAffirmations (click on the FREE button below). The only limitation of the free version is that you can’t create new playlists, but would have to use one of the predefined ones. You can edit playlists with the paid version of Miaffirmations (compare versions).

                  The Power of the Word

I was feeling very frustrated and aggressive the other day…

It was a busy week so I skipped my meditation routine for few days and consequently allowed the stress to accumulate a bit. As the pressure of the work and home duties didn’t allow for any extra rest time, tiredness came in, and with it frustration and aggression felt invited too.

Then I recorded the following Bible verses into my MiAffirmations app:

“Am I a God near at hand,” says the Lord, “And not a God afar off?” (Jeremiah 23:23).
“Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me?”  (Jeremiah 32:27).
‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’ (Jeremiah 33:3).

(I also have those verses printed and placed near my meditation seat, where I use them to initiate a “conversation” with God. For example, if I have a problem or am facing a difficult situation, then I would read these verses and take them as God’s response to all of my troubles :-) )

So, after listening for 10 minutes to the above three verses (with some beautiful instrumental worship music from David Delgado in the background), and reminding myself that those words are God’s answer to my problems, all frustration and aggression have left me and I actually felt happy and at peace.

That’s how the power of God’s Word helped me feel better and why I think MiAffirmations is a great tool for every believer. To grab your copy from the iTunes app store, click on one of the buttons below (compare versions):

James Oppenheim – The foolish man …

“The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet.” James Oppenheim.

This quote by James Oppenheim reminds me that happiness is a state of mind and comes from within. The times in my life when I have been unhappy are normally when I am not displaying the me that I want to be. To become happy again I just remind myself of the things I am happy about by asking myself simple questions like

                    • What am I happy about?
                    • What have I learnt today?
                    • Who have I helped today?
                    • Who loves me?
                    • Whom do I love? and
                    • What is the next action?

I encourage you to record your own version of this quote with your own voice and put it into a “happiness attitudes” or “attitudes” playlist within Miaffirmations.

Here is a recording example I made for my own playlists.
